frost killing hour - xii and xiii

a continued evolution - albeit somewhat inerrupted. am i heading toward the sights of frost and mist over country that was recently tortured by bushfires or is this simpler that that?

i have several ideas to revisit yet. i feel like i have all the time in the world to paint this series. time is not pressing...

Hi Joel,
Wow, what a series! Many works by now...

I really like the upper image here (XII) -- I think I like it because of the feeling it conveys, and therefore it's hard to put into words, because that's an abstract kind of response.

From a watercolour point of view, it's very unusual (and difficult) to achieve such tonal contrasts. Your darks are really rich and luminous (and that's not easy!!!). I like the (?) scratched-out tree trunk forms in those darks. The foreground has powerful light.. a great piece .. Joel

# XIII is also very good imo with its articulation of many trees (and more hinted at besides) : the hope of regrowth and regeneration of the bush.

I think my fave is #XII...but it's a close call..

Best wishes,
Wayne

Wayne, thank you for taking the time to write. it imprsses me how much thought you put into your comments. i pride myself by never "tossing off" voluminous responses to people - opting, rather, for quality. you, however, manage to put such excellent thought and expression to you comments. thank you.

You write "I really like the upper image here (XII) -- I think I like it because of the feeling it conveys, and therefore it's hard to put into words, because that's an abstract kind of response".

it seems that what i paint, when i paint like this, is in response to feelings. the desire i have to make people remember things or feel things through color and mood. so whilst your response may seem to be abstract, it is actually not abstract at all.

Thank you for taking such good care of me by writing with such thought and clarity!

:)

I am now the proud owner of the gorgeous painting, known here as XII!

Wayne, it is actually more nuanced and powerful in person!

Joel Spencer is a genius!!
