melbourne lunchtime (de Graves street)

ever since i started painting i have had a desire to paint some of the quaint and cool "alleyways" and lanes in melbourne, australia. mission number one was to do "de Graves street". this one once the home of the melbourne "soup nazi". anyway. i was walking by de Graves street the other day and it was a warm spring day and the light was gorgeous. so i snapped a few reference photos on my phone. i took these references and this is what appeared. this is a full sheet arches cp. all watercolor paints only. lots of yellow ochre. permanent crimson and cerulean.

Forgive my absence Joel.
Great to see you are still being inspired and are painting.
Melbourne has some wonderful little lane ways. Always reminds me bit of Europe in this regard.
I like the light you have captured.

Hi Joel, I've been offline for a while (extenuating circumstances). Anyhow am currently reviewing some friends' blogs. I love the backlighting you've caught here and it's got a great watercolour fresh 'unfussedness' about it which is mighty hard to achieve :P (speaking from some frustrating experiences, and especially on full sheets!). Hats off to you too for handling Yellow Ochre! For me I always seemed to get muddy mixes with Yellow Ochre, so I've tended to use Aureolin, the siennas and umbers. But you've achieved a great vibrancy of light and colour. Best wishes, and, post some more paintings please (if able)! -wayne

hello melon and squeeze...

"auf der Gasse" means "in the street"!!! i like it a lot!

i do like this piece - but there are so many ways to improve it. as soon as my work life is a little calmer (we are nearly there) i will be revisiting this and similar scenes...
